Exploring Spaces In Between

A national conference that will bring together policy makers, health professionals and artists in health, arts and social policy takes place next month on 23 March 2010. The conference will explore the importance of this work in Scotland through three keynote presentations and a series of interactive breakout sessions.

All the way from Argentina, Juan Bautista Peña and Inés Sanguinetti will be providing keynote speeches. Speaking from his background in banking and experiences founding three Argentinean voluntary sector organisations, Juan will discuss his achievements developing equity in chains of value concerning poor rural communities in his speech ‘To wellbeing through culture and arts: the good old track’.

Dancer and choreographer, Inés Sanguinetti’s speech ‘Arts within community: new scenarios for wellbeing’, will draw on her experiences as Co-founder and President of Crear vale la pena [It is Worthwhile to Create], a non-governmental organisation that, since 1997, has developed a programme of social integration for youngsters in Argentina combining education in the arts, artistic production and social organisation as means to promote social and individual development.

From Art in Hospital, senior project manager Kirsty Stansfield will provide a keynote presentation entitled ‘case notes’, which will explore the process and place of artistic practice in a health and wellbeing context through a facilitated conversation between an artist and a doctor.

Six breakout sessions, led by Scottish arts organisations, will allow delegates to take part in discussions, performances and debates. Focussing on existing projects in Scotland, the sessions will provide an overview of activity in the sector, whilst allowing delegates to explore topics of personal interest in more depth.

The conference will be chaired by writer and producer, Penny Rae, with addresses from the Minister for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop and the minster for Public Health and Sport, Shona Robinson.
